Red Dead Redemption 2 We Loved Once and True – III Walkthrough

October 28, 2018 by Jack McBastard 4 Comments

We Loved Once and True – III is the 20th main story mission in Red Dead Redemption 2 (RDR2). This walkthrough will guide you through all objectives of We Loved Once and True – III Main Quest including all Gold Medals for 100% completion.

We Loved Once and True – III is unlocked when you read Mary’s first letter in camp.

Quest Giver: Mary Linton
Chapter: 2
Region: New Hanover

Gold Medal Requirements:

  • Peacefully convince the Chelonians to let you take Jamie
  • Return Jamie to Mary within 2 minutes

Starting Location: Valentine, New Hanover

Talk to Mary

Arthur has received a letter in camp from his old sweetheart, Mary Linton. She has asked for his help out of the blue after having been apart for many years. Deep down, I think Arthur is a bit of a romantic.

It seems her brother is in trouble with a cult, and she needs Arthur to rescue him.

Rescue Jamie

Travel to the place where the Chelonians gather to worship, and find Jamie.

It seems they don’t take well to outsiders, and they won’t let you talk to Jamie.

  • GOLD MEDAL: Peacefully convince the Chelonians to let you take Jamie

This is done by convincing the Chelonian Master that you are not a threat. He will ask you some questions:

  • “What path have you chosen?” Respond with “Undecided”
  • “What do we search for?” Respond with “Purpose”

Unfortunately Jamie has other ideas, and makes a run for it. Get on your horse and chase after him!

You won’t be able to catch him, but you still have to keep pace.

Follow him across the countryside until he just makes it across some railroad tracks in time before a train blocks your path.

He will talk to you through a cinematic which will end with a quick draw contest.

Very slowly press your R2/RT to have Arthur inch towards his gun, building up the Dead Eye meter. The higher it builds before you draw, the slower time will be, and the more time you will have to aim.

Quickly draw your gun and shoot the gun out of Jamie’s hand before he kills himself.

Ride Back to Mary with Jamie

The shock of the experience has snapped Jamie out of it. He’s ready to let you take him back to Mary.

  • GOLD MEDAL: Return Jamie to Mary within 2 minutes

Better pick up the pace! You’re going to meet Mary at the Valentine train station. Get there, get off your horse and go inside in under two minutes to fulfill this requirement. Watch the cinematic and the mission is over.

This finishes We Loved Once and True – III main mission in Red Dead Redemption 2. Now the next quest The Sheep and the Goats starts.

Next Up: The Sheep and the Goats

The game glitches at this point more me. Jamie and mary clip into each other, and the game audio stops. When the cut scene is over or you hold A to skip it goes to a black loading screen and is stuck there. Anyone else experiencing this?

Follow the train tracks back to Valentine for the quickest way back. You end up right there on the tracks, might as well use them!

I failed to achieve the gold medal first time round and am trying to get it on replay, however the horse I am given seems too slow and gets stressed really fast, I physically can’t catch up to Jamie, never mind return him to Mary. Any tips? Can I cut some of the catching up out somewhere? Or do I have to keep trying it until I get lucky?
