Caida Libre is the 42nd main story mission in GTA V (Grand Theft Auto 5). This walkthrough shows how to get all Gold Medals in Caida Libre for 100% completion.
Gold Medal Requirements:
- Floor It: Reach top speed in the Sanchez
- Glued to the Seat: Don’t fall off the Sanchez during the chase
- One Two Three: Shoot down the plane with 3 shots only
- Mission Time: Complete within 09:45

NOTE: It is advisable to complete this gold medal on your first playthrough of this mission rather than on a replay, so that you can bring a helicopter to use to reach the observatory. This will make meeting the mission time significantly easier. After finishing the opening cinematic, the game will move the helicopter to the road to the north of the circular driveway.
Go to the Observatory
You’re working against the clock, so skip the cutscenes!
- Mission Time: Complete within 09:45
You will start in control of Michael. Hopefully you will be doing this mission for the first time and are able to bring a helicopter to start the mission. Otherwise, it is a long and winding drive to the Observatory and it will eat up a lot of your overall mission time. When you reach the objective marker, get in the marked van.
Shoot the Plane’s Engine
Inside the van is an anti-aircraft emplacement of some sort. When it powers on, zoom in so you can see the area just to the left of the IAA building and wait for the jet to appear.
When it does, you’ll notice that there is a leading red box that indicates where you should shoot in order to hit the plane at its current speed. You’ll see that there’s a wind direction indicator on the screen. You can ignore that, as the leading indicator already takes that into account. Line up on the center of the red box and fire to begin the next Gold Medal requirement:
- One Two Three: Shoot down the plane with 3 shots only
Quickly repeat this twice more, zooming in again and lining up the red box before firing. You’ll want to do this quickly while the plane is moving towards you and easiest to hit, before it starts making its banking turn towards the airport. After three shots hit the engine, control will switch to Trevor who is riding a Sanchez in the mountains and following the plane as it attempts to make an emergency landing.
Follow the Plane and Get the Package
Follow the trail until it curves away from the plane’s path, then go straight over the edge and down the hill. Keep the throttle at full to get the next Gold Medal requirement:
- Floor It: Reach top speed in the Sanchez
At the bottom of the hill, follow the path around to hit a jump that will send you flying over traffic to land on the other side. It’s worth remembering the remaining Gold Medal requirement at this point while you start getting into high speed maneuvers:
- Glued to the Seat: Don’t fall off the Sanchez during the chase
On the other side, follow the path through a small gorge, then through a tunnel under the next road.
Keep following the path, watching out for bushes on either side. Small bushes you can generally ride through, but larger ones are dense enough to knock you off your bike. Be careful though, as small bushes can also conceal rocks that might cause a crash. For safety, don’t drive through any bushes unless you’re certain they are safe.
You will cross a road with two vehicles that cross your path, but keep going straight ahead and don’t worry about crashing into them. On the other side you’ll jump onto a hill while the plane starts to bank to the east. Turn and follow it using the road.
Follow the road for a while, and a short time later it will bank to the north again. Turn before the 24/7 sign (avoiding large bushes) and cut the corner to another dirt road.
Cutting across Sandy Shores Airfield the plane will weave back and forth again. Try to follow its path as it gets out in front of you, as its smoke trail will lead you directly to a jump that you’ll need to hit to clear a train that cuts across your path.
Go straight ahead, across an empty lot near the motel, then turn onto the street and follow it.
Watch out for the dump truck at the very end, then go over the narrow strip of land at the end to cross the water over to where you’ll rejoin the highway.
On the highway, look out for oncoming cars and slow moving tractors. Then cut left onto the Senora Freeway, across the oncoming lane and through the break in the steel barricade.
Follow the road until the plane finally grounds, then carefully drive cross country to reach it, avoiding the fences and many rocks that border the field it lands in.
Kill Javier
Once the plane is down, it is safe for you to get off the Sanchez. Gun down Javier so there are no witnesses.
Enter the Plane
Go towards the open hatch to trigger a cinematic, which you should skip. Afterwards control will revert to Michael.
Leave the Area
Drive the van out of the area. You’re going to need to destroy it, so find yourself a suitable replacement before you ditch it.
Destroy the Van
Slap a sticky bomb on the van, then drive away and detonate when at a safe distance.
Go to Martin’s House
While on the way to Martin’s house, Michael will get a call from Trevor redirecting him to Stoner Cement Works where he will find out that Trevor has blown up another deal and you’re going to be on the run for a while. Skip the cinematic to finish the mission.
This finishes Caida Libre in GTA V.
