The Merryweather Heist (Off-Shore Approach) is the 27th main story mission in GTA V (Grand Theft Auto 5). This walkthrough shows how to get all Gold Medals in The Merryweather Heist (Off-Shore Approach) for 100% completion. For the opposite mission path “Freighter Approach” refer to The Merryweather Heist (Freighter Approach), the mission depends on the player’s choice.
Gold Medal Requirements:
- Show No Mercenary: Eliminate all pursuing Merryweather enemies
- Salvager: Find the container within 02:00
- Mission Time: Complete within 14:30
- Weathering the Storm: Escape the pursuing Merryweather forces in less than 04:00

- Location: La Puerta / Goma St. / Floyd’s Condo

- Requirement: Complete “Scouting the Port“, “Minisub“, and “Cargobob“
- Can Be Started By: Franklin, Michael, Trevor
Drive to the Airstrip
You’re working against the clock, so skip the cutscenes!
- Mission Time: Complete within 14:30
Any character can begin this mission, but you will have to have a four door vehicle to take everyone to Sandy Shores Airfield. Control will switch to Michael for the trip. On the drive, Trevor explains the plan. He will be in the submarine, and Michael will pilot the Cargobob and carry the minisub to where Merryweather is testing their device. Trevor will secure the device and head back to the surface where Michael will recover the minisub and bring it back to land. Franklin will provide cover in the chopper against any Merryweather resistance. When you reach the airstrip, send Michael over to the Cargobob.
Use the Grappling Hook to Pick Up the Submersible
When airborne, press 
/ 
to deploy the grappling hook. Then hover over the minisub and descend until the hook makes contact with the sub to automatically latch on.
Fly to the Test Site
Head northwest over the mountains. When you’re getting close to the site, you’ll be able to see that it’s based on a floating platform in the ocean.
Release the Submersible Near to the Test Site
Fly close to the platform and press / to release the sub.
Use the Trackify App to Locate the Device
Control will automatically switch to Trevor in the sub. Bring up your phone and it will automatically launch Trackify where you’ll be able to see the device’s signal. Be quick, because you won’t have much time to find it to meet the Gold Medal requirement:
- Salvager: Find the container within 02:00
Trackify is absolutely great at showing you direction, but distance is limited to the size of your phone display and will not zoom out, so you won’t really know how far it is to the device until the blip starts moving and by that time you’re right on top of it. You’re looking for a square object on the ocean floor that has four reflectors on its corners.
Go to the Device
All you have to do is drive into the device to have the sub pick it up automatically. Then head for the surface and switch to Michael.
Pick Up the Submersible
Bring the Cargobob to a hover over the minisub and lower down until the grappling hook makes contact and latches onto it.
Fly to the Airstrip
Turn to the southeast and start heading for the mountains. About halfway there you’ll start seeing Merryweather boats appear on your minimap. Switch to Franklin and discourage their efforts. Quickly though, there’s a clock on this Gold Medal requirement specifically:
- Show No Mercenary: Eliminate all pursuing Merryweather enemies
- Weathering the Storm: Escape the pursuing Merryweather forces in less than 04:00
Defend Against the Oncoming Attack from Merryweather
After the first two, enemies will start to appear on the other side as well, starting with two boats and a buzzard. Use / to switch to the other door of the Cargobob. You will have to keep swapping back and forth as new forces appear on your minimap, making sure that every boat and chopper explodes to kill everyone inside.
Next wave is two more buzzard choppers, which will maneuver around you while gunners attack from the doors.
When those two are dead, the remaining two buzzard pilots will suddenly remember that they have missiles on those things and will hang back behind you. You will have to jettison the rear door so that you can shoot at them before they bring you down.
Fly Low Over the Airstrip and Release the Submarine
Hover over the objective marker, and press / to release the minisub next to the hangar. Don’t waste a lot of time lining up, you just have to be close enough and it will count. This will trigger a cinematic, which you should skip, and that will end the mission.
