Fair Game is a Strangers and Freaks Mission (Side Quest) in GTA V (Grand Theft Auto 5). This walkthrough shows how to get all Gold Medals in Fair Game for 100% completion.
Gold Medal Requirements:
- Downwind: Don’t get detected by any elk
- Heart Hunter: Kill 3 elk with a heart shot

Follow Cletus
Meet Cletus outside the Bayview Lodge in the Paleto Forest, where he is going to take Trevor hunting for elk! He hands you an elk caller to put in your mouth, and starts to lead you into the brush to find your quarry.
Hunt the Elk
As Cletus explains how to hunt, you’ll see a wind direction indicator pop up in the lower right of your screen. This will be key to the first Gold Medal requirement:
- Downwind: Don’t get detected by any elk
You’re going to want to watch the indicator constantly as you try to line up a shot on the elk. Wind can change quickly, leaving you having to maneuver to prevent from accidentally alerting the elk with your scent. You’ll always want to stay downwind of the elk, as in having the wind blowing towards you generally from the direction of the elk. What you want to avoid is being upwind of the elk, where the wind is blowing your scent towards the elk. There’s some margin for error, but the second you see the wind shifting direction take note and adjust your position accordingly. Also use stealth mode to avoid making noise as you get closer to the elk. Only approach while it’s grazing, then stop moving when its head comes up to listen.
Once you have a shot lined up, remember the other Gold Medal requirement before you shoot:
- Heart Hunter: Kill 3 elk with a heart shot
You will have four chances to kill an elk with a heart shot, so you can afford to miss only once. To shoot the elk in the heart will require different aiming depending on your angle to the elk. Head on it’s easy, since all you’ll have to do is aim for the center of the chest. More likely you’ll be approaching from one side or the other, in which case you’ll have to aim for the center of the foreleg area. If you’re not exactly perpendicular to the elk, you should try drawing an imaginary line between the two forelegs and shooting for the middle of that line. So adjust a little back if the elk is facing away from you, a little forward if the elk is facing towards you.
Return to Cletus
When you hit the right spot Cletus will call it out as a heart shot, so you’ll know right away if you’ve done it correctly. Go back to him and he’ll lead you to the next area.
Hunt the Elk
This time Cletus wants you to use the elk call to get them to respond to you, giving away their position. Press 
/ 
when prompted to use it, and the elk’s response will put a search area on the map for you to approach. Stealthily approach from downwind as you did previously, then kill the second elk with a heart shot in the same way as the first.
Return to Cletus
Cletus continues to lead you into the woods, saying that he thinks there might be a mating pair up ahead.
Hunt the Elk
To complete the mission you can’t shoot the doe (which does not have antlers), only the bull (which has antlers). Be careful when you shoot though. You’ll see from the search area that they are both very close together, which stands to reason if they’re mating. Be careful that your shot does not go through them both. Circle around them until you have a favorable shot from downwind, then shoot the bull in the heart.
For the fourth elk, Cletus sends you out on your own. You’ll have to use the elk call to find one, then successfully approach it without being detected, and finally kill it with a heart shot.
Approach the Elk’s Corpse
Once killed, the red search area will resolve into a red dot showing the exact location of the kill. Head over to the body.
Photograph the Elk’s Corpse
Take a photo of your kill and text it to Cletus. Afterward he will call you to end the mission.
