Starting Location: Risk Assessment
- Location: Vinewood Hills
- Quest Giver: Dom
- Requirement: Complete “Minor Turbulence“
- Can Be Started By: Franklin
Follow the Dog
On the side of the road Franklin has an unusual encounter with a Golden Labrador where he seems to understand what the dog is saying, and doesn’t even question once why that is. I think Franklin might want to cut back on the smoke.
The dog leads Franklin down a path to a random dude hanging in a tree from his parachute lines. After you get him down, Dom challenges you to a series of risky stunts to feel the rush. Ok, why not.
Follow Dom
Dom will lead you to a flatter part of the trail where he calls in his helicopter to land.
Get in the Helicopter
I mean you’ve come this far, so you might as well. The helicopter takes you high into the sky for your jump.
Skydive to the Landing Zone
When you’re at sufficient altitude, Dom gets all pumped up and jumps out. Press
/ x1: to jump. Wait to pull your ripcord for the first Gold Medal requirement:
- Free Faller: Fall for 00:07 before opening the parachute
There’s no rush on this once, so make a slow seven count before you press
/
to open your chute. You’re aiming for the yellow circle on the top of Mount Chiliad below, but you don’t even have to be that close to trigger the next objective.
Get on a Bike
Just south of the peak are two mountain bikes waiting for you at the head of a treacherous trail down the mountain, which is the setting for the next Gold Medal requirement:
- Downhill King: Win the bicycle race against Dom
Race Dom
Even though this is a race, you’ll want to wait for Dom before you start. The path is incredibly narrow with many sharp turns that end in a sudden drop. If Dom is behind you at the start of the race, it’s almost certain that he will run into you and send you flying or just knock you off the edge of the trail, and since he will always be faster than you at the start of the race, this is just a recipe for frustration. The good news is that his “rubber banding” at the beginning of the race is balanced by his not getting too far ahead of you during the race. So wait for him to get on his bike, then let him get ahead of you. You’ll have an opportunity to pass safely later in the race.
It’s also important to know right up front that if you accidentally drive off the edge and fail the mission, you can safely retry the mission to start again from the start of the race without having to start the entire mission over again from the beginning. That’s key, because it’s extremely easy to launch yourself off the trail in multiple locations throughout the race, not to mention ditching the bike on rocks, fences, or even surprisingly sturdy bushes, sending you flying through the air. Since you can restart the race without penalty, and Dom will wait for you throughout most of the race, take your time and traverse the trail safely until you’re closer to the bottom.
Instead, concentrate on getting the other Gold Medal requirement:
- Big Air: Get 2 seconds of air during the bicycle race
Most likely you’ll get the 2 seconds of air just from the normal drops and gaps in the road that you’re forced to jump over. There are some optional jumps as well if you want to take those but they’re usually a good way to fly off the mountain so buyer beware.
Once you’re close to the bottom, the race will be on. You’ll be able to come back from a huge distance to wipe out even a significant lead in the last few seconds, since Dom will no longer get an artificial speed boost after the last two or three checkpoints if you try to pass him.
When you’re about to reach the penultimate checkpoint at the bottom of this hill, instead cut the corner over the hill and turn early. You don’t even have to pass through the checkpoint, you just have to pass near it for it to count.
Then just mash the
/
button for all your worth to pass Dom at the last second and win the race.
Dom will flip out and whine about his loss, then propose a new challenge before sulking away and ending the mission.
This finishes Risk Assessment in GTA V.
