Jump Onto the Train
You’re working against the clock, so skip the cutscenes!
- Mission Time: Complete within 11:30
You will start the mission with control of Trevor. Get on the Sanchez and head to the train’s location while working on the next Gold Medal objective:
- Fastest Speed: Reach top speed on the Sanchez
Oddly, this is the most difficult of the requirements simply because of the roads available between Trevor’s trailer and the train. The entire area is basically flat, meaning no downhill runs to boost your speed. Depending on the traffic you randomly encounter you’ll often lose speed maneuvering around cars and tractors, not to mention the speed you’ll lose driving over the places where the road will be covered in sand. Finally, the train just isn’t that far away, leaving you little time to build up to top speed in the distance you have.
The trick is to perform wheelies. For whatever reason, in GTA physics the Sanchez moves faster during a wheelie. It may not make sense, but it works. Press
to shift your weight forward, then
to lift the front tire off the ground. Hold that for as long as you can and you’ll have a good shot of reaching top speed quickly.
Following the objective marker, you’ll ride up a sandy path to the railroad tracks. At this point you will need to let the train pass, go behind it, and accelerate up the train’s right side.
Right after the bridge ends, there will be a path on the right up a short hill that will allow you to make your jump onto the train for the remaining Gold Medal requirement:
- Better than CJ: Land on the train using the first jump
When making the jump, it’s easy to overshoot the train. The key is to approach the jump at a very shallow angle, so that you’re nearly going in the same direction the train is when you hit the edge.
WARNING: Do not let off the throttle when you land!
Drive Along the Train to the Engine
It is critical that you maintain acceleration when you land on the train. To reach the engine Trevor has to ride on top of the train, maintaining enough speed to clear the gaps between cars so they are just slight bumps to the Sanchez. If you don’t have enough speed, you won’t be able to clear the gap and you’ll crash. And if you’re stopped entirely, there is not enough room on a single boxcar to reach that speed.
Careful when the train is going around a corner make an easy turn, so you don’t overcorrect and fall off the train. When you’re approaching the engine, don’t worry about slowing down. When you reach it, a cinematic will play where Trevor ditches the motorcycle and throws himself on the engine’s roof.
Skip the cinematic, and keep holding
/
to keep the train at top speed and move to the next sequence faster. Eventually control will switch to Michael in the boat.
Go to the Rail Bridge
Head down the river towards the objective marker, where Trevor will cause a massive derailment. Skip the cinematic.
Use Sticky Bombs to Blow Open the Orange Container’s Doors
Drive over in the boat to the orange container and toss a sticky bomb at its doors. Detonate when at a safe distance.
Protect Michael from Merryweather
Control will switch over to Trevor, and you’ll have to cover Michael as three Merryweather boats pull up, each with two soldiers.
This will be followed up by an armed Buzzard with two soldiers.
Then a second armed Buzzard.
After this, switch over to your sniper rifle and activate your thermal imaging by pressing
/
.
You will see a total of four snipers on the bridge that you’ll have to take out.
After that will be another armed Buzzard an some additional paratroopers that will land on the opposite bank. Take out the Buzzard, then switch back to your sniper rifle.
The explosion of the Buzzard might throw off your aim, but if possible shoot the paratroopers while in the air and before they start to turn towards the bank. If not, then they are easy targets once they land. Depending on the terrain they’ve landed on they’ll frequently faceplant, allowing you to snipe them even before they can get their weapon readied.
Get in the Dinghy
Climb over the tree you’ve been using as cover, and get in the passenger seat of the dinghy. As Michael pulls away, more Merryweather boats appear to ruin your day.
Escape Down the Rapids to the River’s Mouth
Trevor will have to shoot the Merryweather pursuit while Michael drives the boat down the rapids. Switch back to your favorite heavy weapon and use Trevor’s special ability to stay alive, and do more damage to the boats. The rapids will make shooting precisely difficult, so either rely on blowing the boats up, or a weapon with a high rate of fire to spray the boat trying to hit the pilot. A little ways down the river you’ll also encounter a Merryweather humvee on the shore with two soldiers inside.
After those have been dealt with, another armed Buzzard swoops down and open fire. Use Trevor’s special ability again, and spray that cockpit with gunfire.
Land at the Beach
Switching to Michael, head around the point then beach the dinghy near the objective marker.
Go to the Getaway Vehicles
Run for the two vehicles and skip the cinematic to end the mission.
This finishes Derailed in GTA V.
