GTA V Grass Roots – Trevor Gold Medal Walkthrough

August 1, 2026 by Jack McBastard Leave a Comment

Grass Roots – Trevor is a Strangers and Freaks Mission (Side Quest) in GTA V (Grand Theft Auto 5). This walkthrough shows how to get all Gold Medals in Grass Roots – Trevor for 100% completion.

Gold Medal Requirements:

  • Pre-Emptive Strike: Destroy 4 clown vans before they can generate clowns
  • Greatest Dancer: Kill 6 clowns while they are dancing

Starting Location: Grass Roots – Trevor

  • Location: Legion Square
  • Quest Giver: Barry
  • Requirement: Complete “Three’s Company“
  • Can Be Started By: Trevor

Kill the Clowns

Stopping by the Legalize Weed table, Barry has a joint for Trevor too. Considering how many drugs that Trevor has done over his lifetime, the fact that it makes him hallucinate Clowns makes me wonder what the hell Barry is putting in these drugs.

At first glance, this Strangers & Freaks mission could be considered the hardest Gold Medal to earn in the game. The first requirement is the problem:

  • Pre-Emptive Strike: Destroy 4 clown vans before they can generate clowns

While five vans spawn, giving you an extra in theory, many times the vans will spawn with clowns already exiting the van before you have a chance to destroy it. To kill four out of five vans without clowns spawning is statistically improbable. Luckily, there are two things that we can do about that.  The first, and most important is to know where and when the vans will spawn. See the map of Legion Park below for locations and order of vans spawning relative to your starting location.

Positioning yourself in front of where a van will spawn before it appears gives you the best chance of destroying it before clowns emerge, and activating Trevor’s special ability will allow you to do additional damage with each shot. Your first shot should be at the driver’s head to prevent them from getting out of the van. All the rest should go into the engine block until it explodes, hopefully before any clowns start appearing from the back.

When you successfully prevent clowns from spawning, the game will give you an audio cue of an audience cheering “YAY!”, but if you don’t kill it fast enough, you will hear the crowd shout “BOOO!”, or some other disappointed noise. There are a couple of other cheers they will give, like them shouting “OOH!” like they’re amazed, or “WOOO!” in a high pitched sound that sounds like it could be positive, but those are not the same as the “YAY!” sound, and does not count towards the total.

The second tip, and the key to actually completing this mission, is to run out of bounds after destroying the third van. Once out of bounds the game will kill you, then you’ll hit :x: / :a: to retry, but any vans you’ve killed successfully before they have spawned clowns will still count towards your end total. It is a cumulative number across retries, making this task a matter of patience rather than being at the mercy of the RNG gods. When you restart, you’ll begin at the checkpoint where vans 2 and 3 appear, one after the other. Kill them both and then run out of bounds again to retry. Continue to do this until you have four vans killed where you get the “YAY!” audio cue. Since there’s a lot going on with gunfire and explosions, and since there are some audio cues that sound a lot alike, you may want to get an extra one or two vans killed with a “YAY!” to make sure they all count.

Once you’ve gotten all the vans you need for the first Gold Medal requirement, you can work on the second:

  • Greatest Dancer: Kill 6 clowns while they are dancing

Clowns will start to dance immediately after they spawn, or they have a chance to break out in dance when they reload. All you have to do is stay in cover and provoke them to fire at you until they need to reload, and kill them if they start to dance. Generally, they’re more likely to start dancing if they aren’t in cover, so if you run away from them and force them to break cover to chase you, you can increase their chances of dancing after a reload. After you’ve killed six dancing clowns, then you can kill any remaining clowns and/or vans to bring the mission to an end.

This finishes Grass Roots – Trevor in GTA V.

This walkthrough has been updated for the Enhanced Version on PC / PS5 / PS4 / Xbox Series S/X and is also still applicable to the Legacy version.
