In Red Dead Redemption 2 it’s easy to lose your cowboy hat during gunfights and fistfights. When this happens you may wonder how to get it back.
There are 3 ways:
- From your Horse: When sitting on your horse or standing next to it, press L1/LB to open the weapon wheel and R1/RB to switch to the horse items. In the bottom right you can select your hats and retrieve them at any time.
- From the wardrobe at your tent at camp: You can customize your clothing from your tent at the gang camp and pick any hat you have unlocked.
- From Hotels: You can go to a hotel and find a wardrobe in your room. Same as with your gang hideout, you can simply select any hat in the wardrobe.
You can buy completely new hats at General Stores and Tailors.
Getting it back via the horse menu is the easiest and fastest, especially when you’re out in the wilds and don’t want to return to camp.

You can also go back to any general store, and select the hat you lost. It will say “already owned,” and you will walk out wearing it.
