Cyberpunk 2077 Killing in the Name Walkthrough

December 17, 2020 by PowerPyx 22 Comments

Killing in the Name is a Side Job in Cyberpunk 2077 (CP77). This walkthrough will guide you through all steps of the Killing in the Name Side Quest.

Area: Watson (Little China), V’s apartment
Quest Giver: Nancy
Requirement: Complete Side Job “A Like Supreme”
Reward: €$3960 (if you modify the fortune teller instead of listening to Johnny), 570XP, 1282 Street Cred
Mission Info: I’m curious about this Swedenborg-Riviera. To write that kinda nonsense, you’ve gotta have a good head. “Humanity is nothing but a pyramid scheme hidden behind a facade of tears…” Well, fuck me. What’s this guy on? And where can I get some?

Objectives:

  • Investigate the site from the Bartmoss Collective message
  • Call Nancy (Bes Isis) and ask about Swedenborg
  • Go to Nancy’s coordinates
  • Scan the area for clues
  • Hack the router
  • Read the message you received
  • Talk to Johnny
  • Go to the signal’s source
  • Scan the area for clues
  • Hack the router
  • Read the message you received
  • Talk to Johnny
  • Go to the signal’s source

  • Read the message you received
  • Talk to Johnny
  • Go to the signal’s source
  • Search the area
  • Approach the fortuneteller bot
  • Listen to the fortunteller bot
  • Talk to Johnny
  • Pay to hear your fortune (Optional)
  • Scan the fortunteller bot to see if it’s been manipulated
  • Hack the router
  • Read the message you received
  • Talk to Johnny
  • (Optional) Tell Johnny you’ll leave the fortunteller bot alone
  • (Optional) Connect to the fortunteller bot to modify the alogrithm
  • Call Nancy

Starting Location: Killing in the Name

Killing in the Name Side Job starts at V’s apartment. After completing the Side Job “A Like Supreme” (Rogue / Kerry Side Questline), you will get a message from Swedenborg-Riviera that triggers this quest.

Investigate the site from the Bartmoss Collective message

Access the computer in V’s apartment. Go to the “Net” tab Bartmoss Collective (in the bottom left corner, red first icon).

Click on “Read More” on the tab that comes up.

This is the screen you should get as a result to complete the objective.

Call Nancy (Bes Isis) and ask about Swedenborg

Hold  and call Nancy, she should be listed at the top of the phone list.

Go to Nancy’s coordinates

Nancy will share some coordinates with you which automatically get marked on the map, in Santo Domingo. Use the fast travel point outside V’s apartment to travel there.

Scan the area for clues

This objective can be a bit confusing. It wants you to scan for clues but there are really no clues to be found in the yard where you arrive.

To find / scan the clues in Killing in the Name: Head up the fire-exit stairs on the right side of the courtyard. One level below the top floor you can hear a fuse box making noise. Go to it, there will be a router box you can either scan or directly interact with it.

This image shows the path up the ladders:

Hack the router

Here’s the router on the wall, at the top of the fire stairs. Jack into it. Then you must complete a Breach Hack Puzzle. But this is randomized for every player and changes each attempt. You must select the numbers and letters shown on the right side of the Breach screen (in the order: column > column > row). You first select the number in the top row that one of the Breach solutions starts with, then the next matching number in the same column further down, then in the connected row you must select the third number and it must match. Take your time before clicking anything to figure out the right solution.

Read the message you received

Press :left: to read the phone message.

Talk to Johnny

Johnny will spawn. Listen to him.

Go to the signal’s source

Head to the 2nd signal source, in the south Badlands.

Scan the area for clues

Again you must “scan for clues”. This objective comes up 4 times during the quest and each time it’s just a router you must find. For this one, climb the RV via the ladder on its side. On top you will find a router box. Interact with it to finish the objective.

Hack the router

Solve the Breach Puzzle to hack the router.

Read the message you received

Press :left: to read the phone message.

Talk to Johnny

Johnny will spawn. Listen to him.

Go to the signal’s source

A 3rd signal location spawns at the Protein Farm in the south-west corner of the Badlands. Follow the waypoints there.

Scan the area for clues

Just like before you must find another router. Climb up the ladders (red arrow in image below). Then climb 2nd ladder to the top. The router will be found on the side of the wall at the top (2nd image below).

Hack the router

Solve the Breach Puzzle to hack the router.

Read the message you received

Press :left: to read the phone message.

Talk to Johnny

Johnny will spawn. Listen to him.

Go to the signal’s source

The 4th and final signal source location is in Pacifica, West Wind Estate.

Search the area / Talk to Johnny

Upon your arrival at the quest marker, Johnny spawns again, listen to him.

Search the Area / Approach the fortuneteller bot

Now enter the yellow search area and you will automatically spot a Fortuneteller Bot. It looks just like an advertisement sign.

Listen to the fortunteller bot

Listen to the dialogue of the fortunteller sign.

Talk to Johnny

Johnny will spawn. Listen to him.

Pay to hear your fortune (Optional)

Paying the Fortune Teller only costs €$1 but Johnny gets a thrill out of it, so go do that. It will be a blue optional dialogue when looking at the sign, you may need to move around it a little for this option to appear.

Scan the fortunteller bot to see if it’s been manipulated

On the side of the fortuneteller bot is another router you can jack in to.

Hack the router

As before, hack that router by solving the Breach Puzzle.

Read the message you received

Press :left: to read the phone message.

Talk to Johnny

Listen to Johnny and then you can decide between two endings for the Killing in the Name quest.

  • Talk to Johnny and select the yellow dialogue “Chill. Not gonna ruin your fun”. –> call Nancy after and tell her you have no new information. You won’t get a money reward but it results in a more positive dialogue right here with Johnny.
  • Connect to the router on the fortunteller sign to modify the algorithm. Picking “Disconnect from Net” is enough, you don’t need to choose the option that requires 10 Întelligence. –> call Nancy and tell her “Not exactly…”, then you get 3960 Eurodollars as a reward and Johnny will react a bit less enthusiastic about your choice.

(Optional) Tell Johnny you’ll leave the fortunteller bot alone

See “Talk to Johnny” above for this ending.

(Optional) Connect to the fortunteller bot to modify the alogrithm

See “Talk to Johnny” above for this ending.

Call Nancy

Regardless of your choice, select Nancy from your phone contacts like before and it will complete the job.

This finishes Killing in the Name side quest job in Cyberpunk 2077 (CP77).

U can still agree with johny. Just call nancy while in front if box and your can tell her about it. Best outcome. She gives money and loves story.

Interacting with the router and selecting the “generate nonsense” option that requires 10 intelligence and Johnny will be happy with it.

What am I doing wrong? Got the texts, went to the website, clicked read more, called Nancy and no answer. Quest updates to “Complete other jobs until Bed Isis, aka Nancy, is available to call.” That was days ago.

Didn’t have this in my game. Personally, I did this after beating the story. My first idea would be to try sleeping in V’s bed a few times and if that doesn’t work advance the story some more.
The game can be a bit glitchy with when the calls become available in general… sometimes I had to skip in-game time for 2 weeks and drive around to hear back from the quest givers when it only took other people one 24 hour skip.

If you haven’t figured it out already, there is a specific mission (involving the person your trying to call) that you have to complete first before you can complete this mission.

You can’t progress in this mission without finishing Second Conflict first regarding the Kerry quest line.

You have to have an Operating System that allows you to hack. I had one that would slow down time, changed it to one that could hack and it works.

I go to area to scan for clues but when I approach the router I cannot interact with it it keeps going on and off saying that it’s unpowered when I scan it or try to at least

I have the same problem. I will reload the game and try again, in case this is a problem of the current game session. I will let you know in case this works.

I have reloaded. Just reload before entering the yard and the problem highlighted by William (being unable to scan the router in The Scan for clues part of the mission) will disappear. You will be able to scan the router, without any problem.

This quest is full of bugs. They didn’t test this one at all. You need to go on the exact pathway to get the same prompts to complete the quest. If you jump over the wrong wall, or enter the wrong door, you won’t get a prompt to continue the quest, hardstucking you until you reload an earlier save.

Mission requires you to meet Kerry, retrieve Nancy from the Maelstrom clubhouse, complete that mission (or that whole chain), and you MUST have an operating system instead of a berserk or sandevistan.

You can’t call Nancy until you have completed the Kerry gig quest

Have the same issue as Connor
Ive completed the Kerry gig, i have a Legendary Operating system for hacking, yet i cannot scan or otherwise interact with the router. I’ve completed all quests so far aside from the main story and a few fixer gigs.
Next part of the story is meeting Hanako at Embers club, and when you approach it warns you that if you go in you wont be able to complete any other jobs or missions until main story is complete.

Sime situation, same place in the game, dead router. I loaded a save from just before I got to the “scan area” scanned the machine to the side and then walked up the fire escape with no super jumping to ledges or anything, walked right to the router and it let me scan. So it seems like a local area bug with a VERY specific path you have to follow to trigger the next steps.

Weird, you can usually hack “quest” terminals with Sandevistan or Berserker OS. Guess they overlooked this one.

Same here. This is my only incomplete task before Embers. The first router, by the fire escape, has no power and cannot be hacked. I have reloaded and restarted from V’s apartment several times. Nothing works. Maybe it will work on my next playthrough.

I did this quest with a Sandevistan OS and I was still able to hack the terminals. Just a heads up since I’m seeing a lot of comments saying you can’t do it with Sand or Zerk OS. I was using the Dylanar MK.4, for what its worth.
