It Grows Below is the 3rd main mission in Borderlands 4 DLC #1: Mad Ellie and the Vault of the Damned. This walkthrough will guide you through all objectives of the It Grows Below Main Quest.
- DLC required: Mad Ellie and the Vault of the Damned
- Starting Location: Kairos > The Whispering Glacier > Trans-Lunar Intactment
- Quest Giver: Moxxi
- Unlock Requirement: having finished Main Quest 2: Hearing Things
- Reward: Money, XP, Assault Rifle (Green or Blue rarity), Cosmetic: Vehicle Skin
- Quest Description: With Ellie safe in the care of Moxxi, the duty of returning the malevolent keystone to the megalith and breaking its sway over her falls to you. Something is alive and beneath the ice.

Starting Location: It Grows Below
Enter Hollows
Use the new technique you learned in the previous mission to open up the path to the hollows.
Find Crazy Earl
Here, you have to find Crazy Earl.
You will find a big open hole in the ground, drop it down, and follow the path until you reach an open area.
Find Crazy Earl & Kill Creeps
Here, just kill the enemies.
Find Crazy Earl & Scan water tank
After killing the enemies, interact with the water tank.
Find Crazy Earl & Open hatch
Just get on top of the tank to open the hatch with the grappling hook.
Find Crazy Earl & Reach other side
Jump into the big pool of water in front of you and swim up to the platform.
Once you reach the platform, use your grappling hook to open a door.
Find Crazy Earl
Just go through the open door and leave the building.
Reach Daphne
Follow the quest marker. Before you reach Daphne, you will get a hallucination, and you will be teleported to a new area. Just follow the path here and you will soon be teleported back to where you were. Then follow the quest marker until you reach Daphne.
Kill Scavs
After reaching her, just kill all enemies.
Meet Daphne
Now, just go near here, and a short cutscene starts. After that, talk to her.
Reach greenhouse
After talking to Daphne, go to the greenhouse nearby.
Knock on Earl’s door
Then knock on the door by meleeing it.
Return to Daphne
Now get back to Daphne and talk to her.
Reach Darkburns
After talking to Daphne, follow the marker to reach Darkburns.
Kill Scavs
Once you reach Dakburns, kill all enemies.
Gather Darkburn cores x5 & Slam roots and grab cores
You have to get five darkburn cores, but you can only get three in this area. You will notice three big plants. And above these plants, you will see an area that glows green. Do the groundslam on this area, then the plant will spit out the core, which you have to grab with your grappling hook.
Do this on all three plants in this area.
Gather Darkburn cores x5 & Find Treshers
After you got three cores, follow the quest marker to find Treshers nearby.
Gather Darkburn cores x5 & Kill Treshers
You will find two Treshers that you have to kill, each one will drop one core.
Reach Glowleaf
Now that you have the cores, follow the quest marker to find Glowleaf. You have to dive into the water and swim to the other side. During this section, you’ll get a hallucination again, and you will be teleported to a new area.
Re-surface
After finishing the hallucination, you will be back, and you have to get out of the water to find Glowleaf.
Gather Glowleaf x5
Once you get out of the water, you find one Glowleaf in front of you.
Now follow the quest marker and jump into the water to find the next two Glowleaf.
After getting the two Glowleaf, leave the water and get into the next pool with water to find the remaining two Glowleaf.
Return to Daphne
Now head back to Daphne.
Place ingredients
Just plant the ingredients in the machine next to Daphne.
Reach Crazy Earl
After placing the ingredients, head to Crazy Earl at the greenhouse.
Knock on door
Just melee the door.
Release tincture gas
Interact with the wheel in front of the door.
Knock again
Then knock on the door again.
Find Earl
You will get a hallucination again. Finish that sequence, then follow the quest marker to find Earl.
Kill Crazed Earl
Earl transforms into a big tresher, just kill him.
Pickup keystone fragment
Earl will drop a fragment, just pick it up from where he died.
Reach Daphne
Daphne will be near you, just talk to her.
Exit Hollows
Climb up the metal wall at the end of the cave to exit Hollows.
This finishes It Grows Below in Borderlands 4.
