Savage Salvage is a side mission in Borderlands 4 (BL4). This walkthrough will guide you through all objectives of the Savage Salvage Side Quest.
- Starting Location: The Fadefields > The Howl
- Quest Giver: Echo
- Unlock Requirement: Becomes available during Main Mission 3: Down and Outbound. If you approach where this quest begins you will see a spaceship being shot out of the sky, then the quest appears on the map.
- Reward: EXP, Cash, Shotgun (Green to Purple), Eridium
- Quest Description: Those that live through a crash usually count themselves lucky, but that luck disappears quickly on Kairos. Especially if you land in an area ripe with rippers. Thankfully, you’re here. And you’re damn good at killing rippers.

Starting Location: Savage Salvage
This side mission starts in the north of The Howl region. It will become available during Main Mission 3: Down and Outbound, can be done at any time thereafter. Interact with the pile of rubble where the mission icon is.
Note: this mission contains lots of fighting sequences. If the enemies have a red skull icon, you should level up and come back later. If doing this post-story the enemies will be scaled level 39+.
Reach wreck
Use the grappling points to pull yourself up the cliffs where the wreckage is. Be careful of the enemies here. Once you get close to the wreck the objective will change.
Find stronger signal
Head up onto the cliffs to the northeast of the drills. There you will find a red glowing antenna. More rippers will spawn.
Tune into signal
Interact with the green screen on the antenna on top of the cliffs.
Enter ripper tunnels
You will see the drill in the center breaking through the ground. Jump into the hole.
Find crash survivor
Follow the tunnels down to the bottom and then to the right at the bottom and you will find yourself in a Ripper camp.
There is a secret location here on the left of the camp called “Hollow Nob”. It’s only reachable during/after this side mission, not before. It counts towards finding all locations in The Fadefields for the Unfaded trophy/achievement.
Defeat the Rippers and locate the grate you can pull to reveal a path deeper into the tunnel:
Head through and you will get to a point where Psychos and Rippers ambush you.
Kill Ripper guards
Simply clear out the Psychos and Rippers here but watch for the Badass Psycho, he will attack from behind.
Free crash survivor
Look at the mechanism hanging from the ceiling and you will see a grapple point on the bottom, grapple it to free the survivor, Derek.
Follow Derek to ripper drill
Follow Derek until you get back to the Ripper Camp.
Kill rippers in Derek’s way
Hop down and kill all the rippers in the area again. Derek will start moving again.
Follow Derek to ripper drill
Derek will hop down and start running again, follow him.
Kill more rippers in Derek’s way
More Rippers will pop out at the bottom where you just cleared, clear the second wave.
Follow Derek to ripper drill
Derek will be on the move again, follow him.
Kill rest of rippers in Derek’s way
A final wave of rippers will appear once Derek goes forward more. Kill this wave too.
Follow Derek to ripper drill
Follow Derek forward once he starts running again and he will climb into the drill ahead.
Refuel ripper drill
Climb up the ledge to the right and you will see a valve you can turn on. Use it to refuel the drill.
Defend drill refueling
Rippers will spawn and try to kill you again. Defeat them to finish fueling the drill.
Release drill
Once the enemies are all defeated head to the control panel in front of the drill and interact with the lever.
Follow Derek
Head down into the hole in the wall Derek’s drill uncovered until you get outside.
Pull Derek up
Derek will hang off the cliffside, help him up.
Kill attacking rippers
More rippers will attack while Derek is unlocking the cargo bay. Hop down and defeat them.
Wait for Derek
Derek will work his way down, once at the bottom he will inform you it should be unlocked now.
Kill cargo thresher
A Thresher will appear from the ground, simply defeat it to complete this side mission.
This finishes Savage Salvage side mission in Borderlands 4.
